Architects
have long been responsible for many contemporary design classics outwith
the built environment. 20th Century examples include Mies's Barcelona Chair,
Arne Jacobsen’s Cylinda Line and Carlo Mollino’s photography.
How then can architects today demonstrate the continued desire to engage
with the world outwith their own discipline?
NORD Architecture are often provoked and inspired by social and cultural issues
inherent within the contemporary city and this awareness allows a response
in form and materiality. Such an approach has led to the development of a series
of products or objects.
Avoiding stylistic mannerisms, in opposition to the modernist ideal, these
objects are an interpretation of everyday forms, 'found' design an and an exploration
of material aesthetic. They have the strength of inevitability, stirring resonances
that feel like memories: with an uneasy scale, they remind us of things we
have known and highlight things we may not.
Working at an emotional level, these products make responses to the everyday,
smokers in doorways, ideas of threshold, interaction with strangers and dynamic
monotony. Such experiences are commonly held and permit an immediate response
and engagement.
